Questions before choosing your handpan

Simple answers about learning, scales, materials, care and ordering.

Getting started

Can I play a handpan with no musical experience?

Yes. A handpan is tuned to one scale, so its notes are selected to sound harmonious together. You do not need to read sheet music to begin. Start with light, relaxed taps and simple two- or three-note patterns. The goal is not perfect technique on day one. Listen, explore the rhythm and build confidence at your own pace.

How difficult is it to learn, and how long before I can play a melody?

Most beginners can make a clear tone during their first practice session. Playing a full melody takes longer and depends on your coordination, practice time and the piece you choose. Short, regular sessions work best. Begin with touch, rebound and steady rhythm, then follow a simple numbered-note guide or beginner video before adding faster patterns.

Is a handpan suitable for children or older adults?

Yes, provided the instrument feels comfortable to hold and play. Children should use it with adult guidance. Older players can place it on their lap or a stable stand to reduce strain. Check the size and weight on the product page, and choose a playing position that keeps the shoulders, wrists and hands relaxed.

Choosing your handpan

Which handpan is a good first choice for a beginner?

D Kurd is a popular starting point because its gentle minor character suits slow melodies and rhythmic playing, and many learning resources use it. Choose 9 notes if you want a simple layout with plenty of space between notes. Choose 12 notes if you want a wider melodic range and more room to grow. Listen before deciding.

How do I choose a scale that suits me?

Think about the mood you want rather than the note names alone. D Kurd feels warm and reflective. C Major or E Sabye feels open and bright. E Amara has a spacious, meditative character. F# Hijaz sounds more dramatic and Middle Eastern. Use headphones with our sound samples and choose the scale you want to keep hearing.

What is the difference between Octave 2 and Octave 3?

Octave 2 refers to a lower register, with deeper fundamental notes and a stronger low-frequency feel. These instruments may also be larger. Octave 3 sits in a more common mid register, with clearer melodic separation and a quicker response for everyday playing. Neither is better. Choose by listening, then confirm the size and note layout on the product page.

Tuning and materials

Should I choose 432 Hz or 440 Hz?

440 Hz is the standard reference pitch used by most modern instruments and backing tracks, so it is the practical choice for ensembles and playing along with recordings. Some players prefer 432 Hz for its slightly lower pitch and personal listening feel. It is not a better or more healing tuning. Choose 432 Hz mainly for solo use, and 440 Hz for maximum compatibility.

Should I choose stainless steel or nitrided steel?

Stainless steel usually gives a longer sustain, a smooth resonant sound and strong resistance to everyday humidity. Nitrided steel usually has a shorter sustain, warmer attack and clearer separation during faster rhythmic playing. The exact result still depends on the maker, shell and tuning. Choose stainless for spacious melodies, or nitrided steel for a more controlled, percussive response.

Care, sound and ordering

How should I care for my handpan?

Keep your handpan dry, avoid prolonged heat or direct sunlight, and wipe away fingerprints and moisture after playing. Use only a soft microfiber cloth and a care product recommended for your instrument’s finish. Store it in a dry place, and avoid hard strikes or drops. If a note changes noticeably, contact us before trying to adjust the shell yourself.

Will a handpan disturb my neighbours?

A handpan can be played gently, so you can control its volume more easily than a drum kit. Use a light touch, close the door, and avoid late-night practice if sound travels easily in your building. A stable stand or soft floor mat can also reduce transferred vibration. For shared homes, short daytime sessions are the simplest neighbour-friendly option.

How can I choose a sound when I am ordering online?

Use our interactive sound demo to hear the note layout and compare scales before ordering. Headphones will make the low notes and sustain easier to hear. Online audio is a helpful guide, but the sound you hear at home can vary with your headphones, room and playing technique. If you are choosing between two scales, we can help you compare them.

What comes with my handpan, and which accessories should I add?

The product page shows exactly what comes with each handpan model. For travel or extra impact protection, you can add a hard protective case when ordering. You can also choose care or playing accessories based on how you plan to use and store your instrument. If anything in the package is unclear, contact us before checkout and we will confirm it for you.
